Sony Press Conference

  • 40 million units sold worldwide
  • New Model – Slim – Standard PS4 Going Forward
    • Slimmer, Lighter, and more Energy Efficient
    • Launches September 15th for $299.
  • Playstation VR Launches Next Month
  • With PS4, we’re pretty much maxing out what 1080p televisions can do with most games.
  • 4K & HDR.
  • Playstation 4 Pro.
    • Named it Pro to symbolize it is part of this generation and targeted at the hardcore gamer or those who have invested in advanced display technology.
    • At launch will be #1 provider of High Resolution and HDR Content.
  • Mark Cerny – Lead System Architect
    • Doubled the Power of the GPU.
    • Scenes were recorded in real time from PS4 Hardware.
    • We’ve kept simple programming model of PS4 intact, so smaller teams can bring their games to PS4.
    • HDR, without a doubt, is the most exciting advance in TV technology in the last decade.
      • Supporting HDR does not require radical increases in processing power like 4K does.
      • HDR is new technology.  Standards are still in flux.
      • Not all developers will be supporting HDR.
      • Shows “Days Gone” without HDR and then with it turned on.
      • Uncharted 4 Chase Scene in HDR looked incredible.
      • Fetch from inFamous First Light.  Neon lights.
  • You don’t need a 4KTV or HDR TV to get the benefits of the PS4 Pro.
    • If you connect Pro to regular HDTV, you’ll see better graphics.  Higher scene complexity, etc.  Showed more plants and grass appearing.  Shadows of Mordor looked good.
  • # of games you already own may have been patched to play better on the console.  Calling it “Forward Compatibility”.  Patches for half dozen first party titles in the works as well as “quite a few” for their third party developers.
  • Playstation VR should be crisper, have higher frame rates, etc.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn from Guerilla Games – 4K and HDR.  Stunning.  First time you could hear applause.
  • Andrew House – Sony Interactive Entertainment back out.
    • Same discs and downloads will play on both standard model and Pro.
  • Andy Hendrickson – Activision’s Chief Technology Officer –  “His Mic is not on.”  Call of Duty.
    • “With its Greater memory bandwidth and enhanced gpu, we can now deliver richer textures and 4K graphics on top of our trademark 60 fps gameplay.”
      • This fall Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered will support Pro out of the box, day 1.  Black Ops will also support Pro day 1 with update online.
      • Infinite Warfare footage shown was impressive.
  • Aaryn Flynn – Electronic Arts. FIFA 17 and Battlefield 1 will support Pro.
    • Mass Effect Andromeda.
  • Andrew House – Sony Interactive Entertainment back out.
    • Best in class 4K streaming services.
    • New Netflix App available at Launch.  600 Hours of 4K content by the end of the year.
    • YouTube also developing app for PS4 Pro that will support 4K content.
    • Every PS4 will be HDR capable due to update.
    • Playstation 4 LIneup.  Pro launches November the 10th, 2016, priced at $399.  Standard Slim launches September 16th, 2016 at $299.  End.  Only lasted about 45 minutes.
  • Ben Kuchera Article –
    • The PlayStation Pro is a more powerful system that will make your games look better. But not all of them. And some games will look better on 4K television sets. But they will also look better on televisions that support HDR.
    • And others will have a higher frame rate! But some will just look better while the frame rate stays the same. PlayStation VR games may look better, with an increase in “rendered pixels.”
    • There is no simple feature to point to when selling the system to the public, especially if they don’t have a 4K television or a display that supports HDR. The system is more powerful, sure, but the benefit you’ll see as a player will change from game to game and will depend on your display.

correction: RiseOTR uses higher-res+upscale. It was their PR that was purposefully ambiguous/suggesting 4K native w/out actually stating it.

B.Stiernberg @bill_at_zeboyd

I still wanted to tweet about it because offering a 1080p30/improved and 1080p60/standard is what pleases me most.

10:28 AM – 8 Sep 2016

    • Games that run in 4K natively are going to exceedingly rare on the PlayStation 4 Pro, and it sounds like many games will give you a choice of running the game at 60fps or enjoying more graphical effects. It’s up to developers to decide how they’d like to leverage the power of the PlayStation 4 Pro, which means options will differ from game to game.
    • So outside of Sony saying “there is more power and your games will look better” in a very general way, there isn’t really an easy to understand what upgrade that will be seen in a wide variety of games, and we’re already seeing some confusion about which games are offering what resolutions and frame rates.
    • This is a tricky system for which to write an elevator pitch.

  • Video game console leading the drive to 4K.
  • No Blu-ray 4k Player – Project Scorpio can.  Does any of this really matter, though?

We can thank Miyamoto’s Wife for Mario on iOS – http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/8/12848458/nintendo-miyamoto-interview-super-mario-run-iphone-consoles-games

  • “It’s a little bit less of my own experience and more of me witnessing other people,” Miyamoto said. “A perfect example is my wife. When I give her video games or game systems, she doesn’t play a whole lot. But I watch her on her smartphone, and she does a lot of those types of things on her smartphone.”

Emulator Dolphin can now boot very Gamecube game. – http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-09-06-gamecube-emulator-dolphin-can-now-boot-consoles-entire-library

  • Put simply, while some games just worked, those coded with individual quirks have taken years to get running. In the case of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a “gargantuan” code rewrite was needed to allow the game to define its own memory.
  • And, it’s worth stating, none of this work has been done officially. Like all emulators, Dolphin is nothing to do with Nintendo – although Nintendo has not found grounds to step in and stop the Dolphin team’s work.
  • Right now, there’s no way to buy GameCube software digitally and play on Wii U – although the original Wii offered GameCube backwards compatibility.
  • United States[edit]

  • As computers and global computer networks continued to advance and emulator developers grew more skilled in their work, the length of time between the commercial release of a console and its successful emulation began to shrink. Fifth generation consoles such as Nintendo 64, PlayStation and sixth generation handhelds, such as the Game Boy Advance, saw significant progress toward emulation during their production. This led to an effort by console manufacturers to stop unofficial emulation, but consistent failures such as Sega v. Accolade 977 F.2d 1510 (9th Cir. 1992), Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. Connectix Corporation 203 F.3d 596 (2000), and Sony Computer Entertainment America v. Bleem 214 F.3d 1022 (2000),[2] have had the opposite effect. According to all legal precedents, emulation is legal within the United States. However, unauthorized distribution of copyrighted code remains illegal, according to both country-specific copyright and international copyright law under the Berne Convention.[3][better source needed]
  • Under United States law, obtaining a dumped copy of the original machine’s BIOS is legal under the ruling Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc. v. Nintendo of America, Inc., 964 F.2d 965 (9th Cir. 1992) as fair use as long as the user obtained a legally purchased copy of the machine. To mitigate this however, several emulators for platforms such as Game Boy Advance are capable of running without a BIOS file, using high-level emulation to simulate BIOS subroutines at a slight cost in emulation accuracy.[citation needed]
