If you’re a Verizon customer looking to get all up on Samsung Pay, pump the brakes containing your excitement. For now, it seems that (either deliberately or accidentally) Verizon’s branded Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge models are shipping without Samsung Pay installed even though the S6 and S6 Edge variants did. What’s worse is that Google Play Store downloading won’t work. Your only hope for now is to side load the .apk from another source. That said, according to this Reddit thread, once you side load the .apk, simply opening up the “Galaxy Apps” app and tapping “update” for the Pay app fixed any issues with it not working.
Verizon has a long history of knee caping both hardware and software features on a phone. So this is sadly more of the same. If the move is intentional, it’s interesting given that the carrier’s mobile wallet of choice, Soft Card, was rolled into Android Pay last year. There’s always the possibility of VZW wanting to force people to the mobile wallet they partner with. Nonetheless, it’s a sham for customers. We’re holding out hope considering last year’s phones had Samsung Pay included, making this appear more like a mistake.
We’ve reached out to Verizon and will update you once we know more.
Update: We haven’t heard back from Verizon yet but Android Central is reporting that Verizon told them that they are *not* blocking Samsung pay. The rationale is that since the phone isn’t technically available until March 11th and because it’s not installed by default, we’re running into the issue we have now. An odd assertion but we’ll wait and see we guess.
Update 2: According to Samsung, it is indeed an error of sorts, but by design. Since Samsung Pay is not shipping with the device, it will not show up yet. Once the “official” release date comes to pass (March 11th), VZW customers will be able to download the Samsung Pay app and continue on using it.
