The AT&T Easter Bunny Brings Us Unlocked iPhones This Year!

0

It has finally happened, AT&T has caved and will start unlocking iPhones for users that have accounts in good standing and that are no longer confined to their 2-year contract. Previously users would have to depend on a software unlock via a Jailbreak, which wasn’t always an option if the phone had been updated.

Apple had recently started selling factory-unlocked devices with back in November following the massively popular launch of the iPhone 4S.

Once unlocked, your iPhone will be able to be used with any compatible GSM network around the World. For those of you on T-Mobile, you can still use the device, as long as you switch off the 3G connection. Those of you traveling abroad will save quite a bit of money having an unlocked iPhone and purchasing a sim card when arriving in your destination. As many of you should already know, this will not work with those CDMA carriers.

No exact word if this only applies to current models being sold by AT&T, or if it spans all previous devices. I guess we’ll have to wait to see what is included.

Here is the statement from an AT&T spokesperson:

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.
